7 Ways to Feel More Confident When Practicing Yoga

Upon stepping into her first yoga class in 15 years, my friend Robin removed her shoes, looked around and immediately wanted to slip her shoes back on and run out the door. How was her 64-year-old body going to look next to these twenty-something hard-bodies? How would she ever muster the strength to master a headstand, let alone crow pose? What Robin didn’t realize is that she doesn’t need to feel intimidated! Yoga is about letting go and starting from exactly where you are at any point in time. Many of us have read about the power of yoga for its benefits to physical and emotional health, spiritual growth, stress relief and anti-aging aspects, not to mention its meditative qualities and improvements to the...

Is a Fixed Mindset Holding You Back from Better Fitness?

In my former career I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Carol Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford University and author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Dweck’s research focuses on how a person’s mindset influences their achievements. Although the purpose of this work was to help educators understand learning, Dweck’s notion of growth mindset has implications for almost any facet of life. What Are Fixed and Growth Mindsets? People who have a fixed mindset believe that their intelligence and abilities are fixed traits over which they don’t have much control or influence. Thus, they are not inclined to put forth the effort needed to further develop them. People who have a growth mindset believe that their intelligence and...

Do You Struggle to Maintain Your Weight? Try These Tips!

Keeping off extra pounds is a constant battle for most people. No matter what type of diet we follow – vegetarian, vegan, paleo, gluten-free – the challenge of warding off unwanted pounds remains. The secret to overcoming this challenge lies in our daily habits and behaviors. Maintaining a Healthy Weight: The Ongoing Battle Although I have never been overweight, I don’t attribute that to luck or genetics as some people suggest. I have the same body type as my mother, who put on 30-40 pounds in her 50s and 60s and has kept it on well into her older age. The same probably would happen to me if I’d let it. What most people don’t know is that I have intentionally...

You Won’t Believe How Easy It Is to Set a National Powerlifting Record!

Never, in my wildest dreams would I have imagined I would hold a national record in power-lifting. I had always found weight lifting somewhat boring, and, well, hard. But, last year, my son, Chris, a fitness expert and record-holding powerlifter, asked me if I wanted to compete in a local deadlift competition. I looked at him as if he were crazy. I mean, seriously, I love working out but I wasn’t a weightlifter and certainly wasn’t going to win any competitions! Chris pointed out that no records had been set by women in my age and weight class and that I would likely set state and national records simply by default. While it was disheartening to hear that there...

My Flexed-Arm Hang Philosophy: How I Held a Plank for 7+ Minutes at Age 61

Two years ago I set a personal record of 3:05 minutes for holding a plank. I was quite proud of that. But, a few months later, my friend Sheri beat my record with a 6-minute plank, which was at once astonishing and not all that surprising given her fitness prowess at age 50+. Awed by Sheri's accomplishment I wondered if I could get anywhere near her record. As unattainable as it had seemed at the time, I decided to give it a try. Well, I did indeed beat Sheri's record. In fact, I beat it by a minute and a half, setting my new personal record at 7:32! I almost couldn't believe it myself. So, how did I literally double the length of...
